OPUS FOUNDATION
Our Story
The two primary values that drive the Opus Foundation are
- Every child deserves a chance and
- Every diligent path is the right path.
As a child, school wasn’t my favourite thing. I mean, I enjoyed being there, playing and generally broadening my horizon with peers. But I wasn’t too fond of the academic learning style.
I knew early on that I had a passion for music and so it was all I gave any attention to.
My luck resided in the fact that at one point I made the effort, and when I did, I emerged overall 2nd position in my year.
What this served as for me, was proof that I could do it, I realised that if I wanted to, I could do anything. But I had to want it first.
Fortunately / unfortunately I spent all my time doing music related things – watching interviews, documentaries, designing album covers and even at one point writing music!
The issue was everyone who had any say in my life would not look past the lack of interest in academic work and put me in a box as a result.
The traditional educational system teaches us to follow instructions on how to progress and follow the blueprint for what they believe life should be. And while this is a viable route for some children, a lot has changed since 1843 when the first methodist missionaries created the education system in Nigeria.
To cut a long story short, that phase brought me to my purpose.
I was born in a place where unconventional career paths are frowned on, because of the lack of security parents think they come with. The Babyboomers and Thirteeners learnt from the preceding generations that, if a child becomes a doctor, lawyer or accountant they are guaranteed an easier life, which is true to an extent. But now there’s a plethora of lawyers nationwide all fighting for very limited employment opportunities.
It is now time to accept that the status quo has long changed, and that every diligent path is the right path. Life is too dynamic for a one sided perspective.
Our mission at the Opus Foundation is to spread the news of a new dimension. One where no child is left behind due to a refusal to conform.
We achieve this by nurturing and providing opportunity through entertainment for the kids who want something different for their life.
